A Comprehensive Guide to British Airways Tier Points

What are Tier Points? Tier Points (often abbreviated as TP) are points you can earn within the British Airways Executive Club. These points are being used to determine how loyal you are to British Airways and their airline partners. In return for your loyalty you will receive elite status within the program. The more Tier Points you will earn during your membership year, the higher your elite status will be.

How do you earn Tier Points?

You will earn Tier Points by taking flights on British Airways and their OneWorld airline partners. The amount of Tier Points earned for a itinerary depends on several factors.

The first import factor we have to look at is your booking class. When you fly in a premium cabin you will earn way more tier points compared to flying in (discounted) economy class.

Second factor is the distance of your flight, a flight from Amsterdam to London will earn you less Tier Points than a flight from London to New York.

Tier Points are earned per flight segment

When we have a closer look at the flight distance its important to mention that Tier Points are awarded on a flight segment base. To calculate the amount of Tier Points for a direct flight from London to New York, you just have to find out the flight distance between these two cities.

If you’ve booked a flight where there’re  transits involved, you will have to find out the flight distance for each segment. E.G. when you fly from London to New York via Miami, you will first have to figure out flight distance between London and Miami and then do the same for the flight segment between Miami and New York.

The direct flight from London to New York is good for a distance 3.451 miles and will nett you 140 Tier Points in business class.

The flight from London to New York via Miami will earn you 140 Tier Points for the flight from London to Miami and a further 40 TP for the flight from Miami to New York.

When chasing elite status within the British Airways Executive Club flying indirect will earn you way more tier points for a single itinerary.

Tier Points Calculator

Ofcourse you can calculate the flight distance for each segment to determine the amount of tier points you will earn for your full itinerary. But would it not be better to just input your itinerary and get the amount for tier points earned for the trip by a click on a button?

Thats why we developed  the British Airways Tier Point calculator. Simply input your route by typing the IATA codes for all the airports you travel through and see the amount of tier points you will earn for your booking class.
